Our High School Program

In 2018, Learning by Giving (LxG) launched its first youth philanthropy program in order to inspire and educate a new generation of philanthropists and community leaders at the high school level. LxG intends to build the field of youth philanthropy by collaborating with high school partners that have diverse student populations and high concentrations of students who will become first generation college students with the goal of democratizing who gets experiential philanthropy education.

We will ensure quality control for existing programs by providing the curriculum, resources, and support from our staff to existing youth philanthropy organizations to ensure quality control in their programming.

Santa Clara Pilot Program

Learning by Giving (LxG), in partnership with the San Francisco 49ers Foundation, has brought experiential philanthropy to high school students through the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute at Santa Clara High School.  In 2019, 60 high school juniors and seniors divided into two cohorts to learn about philanthropy and drive the grant making process. Over the course of 16 sessions, these students:

✔ examined the needs of their community

✔ determined an issue area on which to focus

✔ created values and mission statements

✔ crafted and released an RFP

✔ conducted due diligence

✔ collectively debated which organization fit their mission

✔ awarded $20,000 to two high-impact nonprofits
